CATTAILS GOLF COURSE-ALAMOSA

Another route into New Mexico is on US 285 south 235 miles to Alamosa. Stop to play in the afternoon at Cattails Golf Course along the banks of the Rio Grande River. Tall cottonwoods frame the fairways. Lodging is cheaper here than driving on down to Taos 90 miles away. 719-937-7853. www.alamosacattails.com

RIO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE

Driving on to Taos on US 285, take the US 64 cutoff to be able to drive over the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. At 1,280 feet across, it is 650 feet above the river.  Stop at the viewing area.

HISTORIC TAOS

Take a break on your drive to visit the historic Taos Plaza. Walk over to eat in the rustic patio of La Cueva Cafe, also the local's favorite take-out food spot.
